How It Works

Companion planting is the practice of placing certain plants near each other to take advantage of natural relationships. Some plants enhance growth, repel pests, or improve flavor when planted together, while others compete for resources or attract harmful insects to their neighbors.

Benefits of Companion Planting

  • Pest control – Some plants repel insects or attract beneficial predators that protect neighbors
  • Pollination – Flowering companions attract bees and other pollinators to the garden
  • Nutrient sharing – Legumes fix nitrogen in the soil, feeding nearby heavy feeders
  • Shade & support – Tall plants can shade cool-weather crops or serve as living trellises
  • Space efficiency – Interplanting fast and slow growers maximizes garden yield

The Three Sisters

The classic companion planting example: corn, beans, and squash planted together. Corn provides a trellis for beans, beans fix nitrogen for all three, and squash leaves shade the soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
